Gourd spinning top - named Lullaby. Grown and made by Elise Goodge. Made of gourd, wood, chord. (21cm high, 6.5cm wide) Spinning tops were used by Maaori for fun with competitive games. They also had a more serious purpose. There were singing versions, like this one, that were played during funerals to symbolise the wailing and pain of the grieving. They were also played to settle more serious disputes when groups were unable to come to a consensus decision.
