Maori gourd flute - named 'Bat'. Grown and made by Elise Goodge. Made of gourd. (8.5cm high, 6cm wide) Putangitangi are a round flute played during times of grief or sadness. Just as Hine-pu-te-hue placed the anger of her brothers into a gourd and turned it into peace through playing the putangitangi you take your grief and sadness and turn it into peace. This particular putangitangi's decoration has been inspired by the South Island petroglyphs and depicts a bat. It has been decorated using the Hawaiian method of inside out decoration.
